The U.S. Medicare program is expected to expand continuous glucose monitor (CGM) coverage to people with Type 2 diabetes who do not use insulin. The policy change could make Abbott’s glucose sensors available to millions of additional Americans and materially broaden the addressable market. Abbott expects approximately 10 million additional Medicare recipients to become eligible, while Dexcom estimates about 25 million non-insulin-using Type 2 diabetics in the United States. Abbott CEO Robert Ford and Dexcom CEO Jake Leach characterized the potential coverage expansion as a major market opportunity.
