Second-quarter research and development expense increased 15.1% to $1.659 billion from $1.441 billion. Second-quarter selling, general, and administrative expense increased 30.2% to $4.025 billion from $3.091 billion, while six-month SG&A increased 26.2% to $7.765 billion from $6.152 billion. The increase in operating expenses coincided with the Exact Sciences acquisition, which added $1.0 billion of sales during the first six months and introduced acquired intangible-asset amortization. Abbott’s gross amortizable intangible assets increased $12.3 billion to $39.8 billion by June 30, 2026, and estimated 2026 amortization expense increased to approximately $2.6 billion.
