Second-quarter SG&A expense increased $87 million, or 5%, to $1.803 billion, while six-month SG&A increased $271 million, or 8%, to $3.583 billion. SG&A declined as a percentage of sales by 80 basis points to 33.1% in the quarter and by 40 basis points to 33.7% year to date, primarily because selling costs grew more slowly than revenue. Second-quarter R&D expense increased $28 million, or 5%, and six-month R&D increased $100 million, or 10%, to $1.069 billion. R&D investment supported product-development programs across the businesses and remained 10.2% of sales in the quarter and 10.0% year to date.
