The second-quarter effective tax rate increased to 44.2% from 34.6%, a 9.6-percentage-point increase. Income tax expense declined to $398 million from $440 million because pretax income fell to $900 million from $1,273 million, despite the higher effective rate. For the first six months, the effective tax rate decreased to 30.7% from 32.4%, while income tax expense increased to $928 million from $462 million because pretax income more than doubled to $3,025 million. The company reported a 25.5% marginal statutory federal and state income tax rate for both second quarters.
