The second-quarter effective tax rate decreased to 21.5% from 22.9% year over year. The rate reduction resulted from favorable settlements of state tax examinations. The six-month effective tax rate was 22.6%, compared with 23.1% in the prior-year period, and the resulting tax-rate change increased the proportion of revenue converted into net income.
