NYISO’s July 2026 reliability assessment continued to identify near-term reliability needs in New York City for 2026–2030, dependent on planned transmission and generation projects and demonstrated capability from the Champlain Hudson Power Express, which entered commercial operation in May 2026. NYISO designated certain generating units to remain available through May 1, 2029, and warned that demand growth and aging generation could create additional needs beyond the near-term horizon without new supply resources. CECONY’s updated report projects a New York City electric reliability need of 125 MW beginning in 2033, increasing to 675 MW by 2036, driven by load growth and generation retirements. CECONY’s proposed contingency plan emphasizes competitive procurement of clean-energy resources, including transmission- and distribution-connected battery storage, to address the projected need through 2036.
