Accrued Legal and Regulatory

Elevance Health, Inc. · 2026-07-15 · Importance 59 · Surprise 42

Management attributes the primary driver of the six‑month net income decline to a loss contingency accrual for the company's best estimate of potential exposure related to the resubmission of certain historical Medicare Advantage risk adjustment data; this accrual was recorded in the Corporate & Other segment. The accrual materially increased unallocated corporate expenses and was cited as a primary contributor to higher operating expenses and lower shareholders' net income for the period. CMS subsequently provided steps and, per a July 13, 2026 letter, closed the enforcement process after the company completed required actions, but the financial accrual impact remained in the period results. This contingency affected operating results and operating expense ratios and was explicitly called out in segment commentary.
