PTFI plans to transition the Grasberg minerals district’s existing energy source from coal to natural gas to meaningfully reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. The planned investments in a new gas-fired combined-cycle facility were deferred following the September 2025 external mud rush incident. Start-up and commissioning are now scheduled for the second half of 2029. The dual-fuel power plant and new facility are expected to use natural gas supplied by a floating liquefied natural gas storage and regasification unit.
