Hawaiian Electric contracted GE Vernova to supply six LM6000VELOX aeroderivative units for a 250 MW repowering project at the Waiau Power Plant on O’ahu, Hawaii. The project will replace older oil-fired steam turbines and is intended to improve Hawaiian grid reliability and resilience. The modernization is also designed to support greater integration of solar generation and energy storage. The first two units are expected to become operational by 2029.
