Remdesivir Ebola Deployment

GILEAD SCIENCES, INC. · 2026-08-08 · Importance 25 · Surprise 42 · In source text

Health authorities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are broadening use of Gilead’s antiviral remdesivir during a worsening Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak. The outbreak reportedly reached nearly 4,000 cases and more than 1,800 deaths in 12 weeks, creating an urgent infectious-disease demand environment. Remdesivir has not been formally proven effective against this strain, but observational data from Congo and Uganda suggest potential benefits. Deployment is occurring while formal studies continue, alongside Merck’s Ervebo vaccine.
