Second-quarter income tax expense was $157 million compared with a $49 million tax benefit in the prior-year quarter, despite pretax income increasing to $663 million from a $153 million pretax loss. Six-month income tax expense declined to $115 million from $186 million as pretax income decreased to $746 million from $832 million. The second-quarter tax expense reduced GAAP net income from $663 million of pretax income to $506 million of net income. Adjusted second-quarter tax expense was $78 million, calculated using an adjusted effective tax rate that includes tax credits and non-recurring tax items.
