Salaries, wages and benefits increased $15.3 million, or 2.3%, in the second quarter but decreased $4.5 million, or 0.3%, in the first six months. The average number of active full-time employees declined 7.1%, reducing salaries and wages, while performance bonuses, the September 2025 wage increase, retirement costs, and health-benefit claims increased compensation costs. Operating supplies and expenses increased $35.2 million, or 24.7%, in the quarter and $32.1 million, or 11.0%, year to date, primarily because diesel costs rose. General supplies and expenses increased 11.4% in the quarter and 14.6% year to date due to cloud-computing technology and employee-training costs.
