PSEG faces potential remediation liabilities and penalties under federal and state environmental laws for contamination at properties it owns or formerly owned and sites affected by hazardous substances it generated. Federal and state agencies allege that historic PSEG operations and other companies discharged substantial contamination into New Jersey’s Newark Bay Complex. The EPA has designated portions of the Newark Bay Complex as federal Superfund sites requiring investigation and remediation under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act.
