PGIM adjusted operating income increased 28% to $294 million from $229 million, driven mainly by higher asset management fees from equity-market appreciation and investment performance. U.S. Businesses generated $957 million, essentially unchanged from $955 million, as higher expenses and less favorable underwriting offset stronger net investment spread results. International Businesses increased adjusted operating income to $855 million from $761 million, supported by higher investment spreads, joint-venture earnings and Brazil growth, partly offset by the Prudential of Japan sales suspension. Corporate & Other reported a $279 million adjusted operating loss, compared with a $280 million loss in the year-ago quarter.
