Terafab Chip Fabrication Initiative
Tesla, Inc. · 2026-08-04 · Importance 71 · Surprise 60
Tesla and SpaceX announced Terafab, a $16.8 billion semiconductor manufacturing campus in Texas intended to produce chips for Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots and self-driving vehicles, as well as SpaceX orbital data centers. Elon Musk said approximately 75% of the facility’s AI compute output would be allocated to SpaceX and 25% to Tesla’s Optimus program. The facility is planned to produce more than 1 terawatt of AI compute capacity annually and create over 3,000 Texas jobs in its first phase. The project could reduce Tesla’s dependence on external chip suppliers but carries substantial semiconductor manufacturing execution and capacity risks.
