SpaceX plans to launch Starlink Mobile by late 2027 and directly compete for customers of AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The proposed service would use EchoStar spectrum, upgraded next-generation satellites, small cellular base stations, and access to cell towers to extend coverage into dead zones and potentially operate as a full-fledged wireless carrier. SpaceX executives said the company expects to capture a significant number of incumbent-carrier customers, although analysts cited challenges in serving dense urban areas and the substantial capital and execution requirements. Investor concerns about the competitive threat contributed to a 2.0% decline in AT&T shares and an estimated $3.3 billion reduction in market capitalization on August 5.
