Network Capacity and Service

UNION PACIFIC CORP · 2026-07-23 · Importance 28 · Surprise 32

Union Pacific improved freight car velocity by 5% in the second quarter and 7% year to date, driven by lower terminal dwell and faster train speeds. Terminal dwell improved 7% in the quarter and 9% year to date, while train length increased 2% as mainline capacity investments and transportation-plan optimization enabled the railroad to handle more carloads. The company used these capacity improvements to accommodate increased intermodal shipments and increased system train length, while workforce productivity rose 5% and locomotive productivity rose 1% in the quarter. Both intermodal and manifest service performance indices were 95% in the quarter, although the indices declined versus 2025 because of comparison with higher historical benchmarks.
