ExxonMobil maintains ambitions to achieve Scope 1 and Scope 2 net-zero emissions from operated assets by 2050 and Scope 1 and Scope 2 net zero in integrated Upstream Permian Basin unconventional operated assets by 2035. The company also targets elimination of routine flaring in line with the World Bank Zero Routine Flaring initiative and near-zero methane emissions from operated assets. Its lower-emission strategy includes carbon capture, transportation and storage, hydrogen and ammonia, lower-emission fuels, direct air capture, lithium, carbon materials, advanced recycling, and low-carbon data centers, but ExxonMobil states that current policy and technology trends are not yet sufficient to achieve net zero by 2050.
