Fiserv’s August 2026 Small Business Index indicated that consumers continued to spend more per visit while making fewer visits. U.S. small-business transactions declined for the tenth consecutive month, despite higher dollar volume. Gas stations and fuel dealers recorded a 15.1% year-over-year increase in the index, while building materials was the other retail sector showing month-over-month growth.
