Income Tax Rate Changes
Tesla, Inc. · 2026-10-22 · Importance 46 · Surprise 56
Tesla’s effective tax rate declined from 27% to 20% for the first nine months of 2026, reducing the income-tax provision by $488 million to $1.10 billion. Third-quarter effective tax rate declined from 29% to 16%, and the quarterly provision decreased by $418 million. The rate reduction primarily reflected changes in the mix of jurisdictional earnings and, for the nine-month period, a release of the valuation allowance on California deferred tax assets other than research and development tax credits. The benefit was partly offset by nondeductibility of stock-based compensation related to the 2025 CEO Performance Award.
